Harry Carter
Wyatt "Harry" Carter LEBANON, Va. Wyatt "Harry" Carter, age 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at his home. Harry was the son of the late Wyatt M. Carter and Margaret G. Carter. He was born March 23, 1931, in New York City, where his father was working during the Depression. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Jo Carter Dillon. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Carter; six children, Jeanie and husband, Jerry Spence, Kathy and husband, John Mull, Michael Carter, Carole Fields and Kevin Fitzsimmons, Kelly and husband, Max Hermann, and Wyatt "Scooter" and wife, Millicent Carter; 10 grandchildren, Adam Spence, Joey, Tyler and Charlie Fields, Matthew, Carter, Michael Mull and wife Lindsey, Christopher, John and Abigail Carter; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Zackary Carter; three nieces, Sue, Lisa and Margaret Ann. Harry grew up in Roanoke, Va., where he and Dorothy graduated from Jefferson High School and married. In 1976, he and the family moved to Lebanon from Winston-Salem, N.C. Harry was a dedicated Lebanon Pioneer fan and helped establish the first Pioneer weight training center along with efforts to establish the Track and Field set up at Lebanon High School. Harry and Dot were members of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church since moving to Lebanon. Harry was an avid golfer and for over 40 years sponsored the "Honest Harry" Myrtle Beach invitational with an average of 100 people from all over the U.S. each year. In addition to his direct family, Harry left a host of good friends including Bob Montgomery, Caroll Snead, Andrew Chafin, Bill Bolling, Dennis Simmons, Scott Bell, Benny Dales and many more along with his "special ladies," Shirley Harmen, Pat Wade and Selena Honaker. A special thanks to the nurses, aides and staff at Home Nursing Company, Inc. for their care and support. A celebration of life will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011 in the Lebanon United Memorial Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wil Cantrell officiating. Interment will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens, Lebanon. Serving as pallbearers will be Max Herman, John Mull, John McQueeney, Kevin Fitzsimmons, Scooter Carter and Michael Carter. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2011 at the church. In lieu of flowers, you may send donations to the Lebanon Booster Club.
